What is a Dental Filling?
We call the application to close the region where the caries is cleaned with substances similar to dental structure after the rotten parts of our rotten teeth are cleaned by our dentist, the filling. Other than that, filling application may be desirable also for the broken teeth due to trauma.
Filling is preferred fort he caries at the beginning or middle level. The treatment method of filling would be insufficient for the caries which have far progressed.
The caries which has reached the living tissues within the tooth also weakens the vessels and nerves. Therefore, first root canal treatment method is preferred, and then the filling application is made.
When compared to other methods of dental treatment, it is a fairly simple process. This application can be made in superficial caries by cleaning the region without anesthesia. In terms of patient comfort, we prefer the anesthesia application in deep caries. After the caries are removed completely from the tooth with aerator device, strong chemical bonding agents are used to provide the adherence of the filling to the tooth. Then the filling substance, which is gum-like and soft, is placed in a way to fill in the gaps. This substance which is placed is made suitable to the dental structure by hardening it with the help of a special halogen lamp. The average duration of the filling application is 15 minutes except the anesthetic application. While the session periods of the treatment used to be longer with the temporary fillings in earlier periods, recently the treatment ends in one session. If the caries has deepened and reached living tissues, vessels and nerves, the session periods can increase to a few sessions if root canal treatment application is used. This chemical filling substance which well holds on the tooth has similar characteristics with the robustness and color of our tooth. Therefore, it is quite inseperable from the place it holds on. As all kinds of factors that can break the tooth can also break the filling, the broken fillings should be renewed. The filled teeth can be brushed like normal teeth, dental floss can be used, and interface cleaners can be used. Thus, caries formation is prevented in the interfaces. The average duration of fillings is 7-8 years. After this period, if there is no need for filling renewal, the routine control of fillings is made. If a problem is detected under the filling as a result of the control made by the dentist or if there is an irregular structure of fillings, the fillings should be renewed.
There are three types of fillings:
This type of filling, which is preferred for beginning and intermediate level caries, has a metallic and black appearance in the mouth. The type of amalgam filling is a kind of filling that has been applied for many years. It is continuously compared with composite fillings. Amalgam has started to be not preferred recently due to its color. In addition, one of the reasons why we do not prefer is that it contains mercury, and mercury includes toxicity harmful to human health.
This type of filling, which is preferred for beginning and intermediate level caries, has the color of tooth. This kind of filling, which is more aesthetic, takes the place of amalgam filling every day with the advance of technology. Composite filling can be applied in all of the regions where amalgam filling can be applied. As the composite fillings are made of a substance similar to tooth, the fillings are often unnoticed in the mouth.
There are laboratory stages in this method which is applied for advanced caries, and it is more costly than the other types of fillings. We prefer porcelain filling if the caries has deepened and the area to be filled is large. The porcelain fillings, which are more aesthetic, are as robust as our own teeth.
