REMOVAL OF WISDOM TEETH
What is wisdom tooth?
It is called wisdom tooth as it erupts in the people in the age of 20s. The wisdom teeth are indicated as teeth No. 8 far behind the mouth. Sometimes these teeth lose their way and tend to erupt in trapezoidal and horizontal position by leaning on the tooth in the front instead of erupting from above to below or vice versa. They are functional as the other teeth; they help grinding, they can support bridges when the adjacent teeth are damaged and missing. It does not mean that every wisdom tooth that is seen is to be extracted. Most of the time they have a savior role.
In which cases is wisdom tooth extracted?
The wisdom teeth which are not in the normal position and path, and which erupt sideways are always problematic. They can cause pain, they can cause the teeth in the front to rot, and they can cause the teeth in the front to be uneven as they push them. In such cases, the wisdom tooth should be extracted. The teeth that erupt sideways can cause pressure on the teeth in the front and can cause various dental inflammations, facial swelling and severe pain. First, antibiotic treatment is started in the inflamed wisdom teeth, and inflammation is eliminated. In the case of a wisdom tooth which cannot erupt properly as it cannot pass through the bone, the bone is surgically removed and the way is opened for the eruption of the wisdom tooth.
Is pain felt in the extraction of buried wisdom tooth?
As nerve conduction is stopped by local anesthesia during the extraction of buried wisdom teeth, the patient does not feel any pain. The lower jaw gets numb slightly harder than the upper jaw. Even if the positions of the buried wisdom teeth are different, some can be located under the bone and some under the gums. Although the operation of the wisdom teeth located under the bone last a little longer, no pain is felt during the operation. And in the buried wisdom teeth which are located on the bone and which only have gum retention, a much shorter operation and a treatment process passing more comfortably after the operation take place. If there is a buried wisdom tooth taken by removing the bone, pain may occur for 1-2 days after this operation. However, these pains will also be prevented by the pain relievers prescribed by your dentist.
How is the healing process after the extraction of buried wisdom teeth?
If there is suturing (and there is suturing in most), the sutures are removed 1 week later and the patient has no discomfort. There may be pain and swelling for the first 1-2 days after the buried tooth is extracted, the patient should be particularly careful not to peal off the sutures. And the mouth should not be opened large and consumption of soft and liquid foods should be preferred so that the sutures are not pealed off. And the following should be cared for during the process of care after the sutures are removed; the dental gap does not close there immediately. First, the gum closes, and then that gap closes when the bone is filled in from the below over time. Naturally, the foods to enter that dental gap should not be infected, and we should not take our tongue to that region continuously.
