What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is popularly known as wire treatment. In fact, orthodontics means smooth teeth. That is, orthodontics is a branch of science dealing with misaligned teeth and upper and lower jaw imbalances. Orthodontic treatment is done for many reasons. The first presumption of everyone is aesthetics, to align misaligned teeth. This treatment method is preferred for this reason. In addition, hygiene is provided a little more difficult in misaligned teeth than aligned teeth. The fact that smooth wall can be cleaned easier than indented wall can be shown as an example for this hygiene. As AOB (anterior open-bite) teeth do not merge fully at the front, it affects speaking, and this can be corrected with orthodontics. It helps some patients with jaw joint problems, but it may not treat every patient with jaw joint problem. Other treatments may be necessary in addition to this. Orthodontics only helps it. As it corrects the closure of upper and lower jaws, it has positive effects on jaw joints.
Is pain felt in orthodontic treatment?
Definitely no pain is felt during the installation of brackets (i.e. wires) into the mouth. However, there is a familiarization period of 2-10 days in every orthodontic treatment. First, the teeth are mobilized. A force is applied to move them. One feels a bit uncomfortable due to this force. This discomfort will be like the pressure on your ears and nose created by wearing glasses. If you get used to wearing glasses in a period of 10-15 minutes, you will get used to the brackets in 2-10 days. The slight pain is the case we call sensitivity, and you can come through that familiarization period with mouthwash and pain relievers.
What should be done if the brackets are damaged?
Sometimes the brackets can be broken in orthodontic treatments. This can occur if we eat hard foods, chew gum, and consume soft confectionery type foods such as Turkish delights and gels. Emergency situations are very rare in orthodontic treatment. Usually emergency situations do not occur, and the brackets do not entail any danger when broken. If the brackets have gotten out of mouth, the only thing to be done is to wrap them into a napkin, and inform your dentist. According to the case, the bonding process will be carried out in the appointment determined by your dentist.
At what age is orthodontics applied?
Normally, all parents should have their children examined by an orthodontics specialist when they are 7-8 years old. But it should not mean that it is applied only to 7-8-year-olds. Orthodontic treatment can be applied to patients of all ages with robust bone and dental structure, and can mobilize the teeth. There are differences between pediatric and adult orthodontics. It is based on growth development in the children. If the upper jaw is at the front and lower jaw is at the back and vice versa, these are treated by using the growth development potential of the child in adolescence. If this disorder is present in an adult patient over 20 years, the treatment method is changed. As the growth development has stopped in patients over 20 years, if the lower or upper jaw is at the front, these patients are treated with surgeries accompanied by plastic surgeons.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
The durations of treatment vary according to the dental structure, the condition of bones, and the age of the patient. If there is a skeletal disorder in a young or pediatric patient and if one jaw is at the front or back according to the other jaw, this treatment process lasts 2-2.5 years. If there is not a skeletal disorder but crowding in the teeth, it can last as long as 3 months, 6 months or 24 months. The tooth movement in adults is slower than children. If there is a skeletal disorder in the adults and if both orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery accompanied by plastic surgeons have been carried out, the treatment process is longer and can take up to 2-2.5 years.
Generally and normally, orthodontic treatments can take between 1.5 to 2 years.
What should be taken into consideration after orthodontic treatment?
Besides the share of importance that the doctors should give regarding the positive outcome of orthodontic treatment, the share of the patients during the period after the brackets are installed is also high. There is always the risk that the brackets bonded with chemical adhesives are broken. In order to prevent this breaking, some habits should be changed. Absolutely no snacks and chips should be eaten, a food with seeds should not be thrown into mouth immediately (for example, olives should be eaten by removing the seeds first), biting and tearing should be avoided (for example, apple should not be bitten as whole but cut into small slices with knife and chewed in the rear teeth region). Acidic drinks like coke should be consumed very little, if children are to consume such drinks, absolutely pipettes should be used, and more attention should be given to oral hygiene according to a normal person. As food remains would be accummulated easier as the threads are bonded on the teeth, oral hygiene should be provided at least three times a day and using auxiliary brushes.
